Very adoration gift from a husband to wife comes in scarlet lined leather upholstered carry box with inset bevelled glass panel

When you think of vibrators, you may not automatically think of the Victorian era. Or Ireland.

But you would be wrong.

Over the weekend, Matthews auctioneers in County Meath, Ireland, is offering for sale an antique carved tusk ladies comrade in scarlet lined leather upholstered carry box with inset bevelled glass panel. Its also known as Lot 457.

It is a beautiful part, which comes from one of the well-known Anglo-Irish families, auctioneer Damien Matthews told the Irish Times.

A family member saw it in a drawer, and he threw it in the auction for fun actually. We belief the tusk dates back to the 1840 s. This chap, the original owned, was in India in the 1840 s, where he shot himself an elephant, and brought the tusk home.

The well-travelled human later fought in the Boxer Rebellion in China from 1899 to 1901, which is where it is thought he had the tusk shaped into something more useful.

The Chinese were famous for engraving tusk, and the quality of engraving is so good, I think that is where he would … have had it done. He would not have known that he was coming home, and would have wanted his wife to have this, told Matthews.

This was a very enlightened household, and this would have been a very adoration gift from a husband to wife. You can see that because the level of detail is incredible, down to the folds of the scalp. Theres a nerve carven at the base of it, where her finger would have been, and a receptacle in which she could continue a lock of his hair.

Though the fine detailed descriptions of the sexuality plaything was done in China, its receptacle was induced in Ireland. The leather box is Irish. She would have got the box carven for it theres a stamp on the lock with the name of an Irish locksmith.

The Irish device is far from the only instance of the Victorian-era interest in such matters. In the 2011 movie Hysteria, Hugh Dancy plays a real Victorian physician called Mortimer Granville, who becomes his 1880 s invention of a muscular massage device into a sexual arouse for his female patients.

Several historians have claimed women were brought to a hysterical paroxysm( an orgasm nobody wanted to admit to ), by physicians through pelvic massage( ie masturbation ). To help the doctors whose thumbs were getting tired from all the patients being treated, supposedly, a vibrating device was fabricated. Some, though, are sceptical that the Victorians fabricated the vibrator.

Matthews tells the ladies companion he is offering for sale is a great rarity.

Ive been at this 25 times and Ive never seen anything like it. You do get the Victorian era massagers every so often that come up for auction, but nothing like this.

Youve got to remember in Victorian periods, the amount of people that could render to indulge or make something like this was tiny. Ninety nine per cent of the country were trying to get by, so there were perhaps 400 or 500 families in the country with those kind of intends. Its not just a piece of erotica its a work of art, and a fascinating part of social history.

There has been much interest in the part, and the guide price established at 500 -8 00.
